The Spokane Art School is a non-profit corporation established in 1968 and provides quality art education taught by professional artists. We strive to remove barriers, both financial and otherwise, to hands-on arts education. We provide art classes to the general public in a variety of studio genres. Off-site classes are also offered through our ArtReach program to underserved groups; schoolchildren, Crosswalk clients, library patrons and community centers. The School maintains an active gallery exhibition program that provides educational programming for viewers, as well as exposure and financial support for local artists and teachers.

Sondra Barrington lives in a small cottage near Latah Creek with her dashing husband and a smattering of pets. She relishes interrupted time in her studio, repurposing vintage, recycled and scavenged objects. She likes to explore many forms of creativity. Her artistic path has traversed pottery, batik, fiber, paper, resin, glass, metal and mixed-media assemblages. Sondra is exceedingly prone to tangents and typically completes a small series of unique, similarly-inspired items. She teaches workshops and thoroughly enjoys encouraging people to get messy, explore their boundaries and express their creativity.

Amy Mickelson, is a jewelry designer who works with colorful glass beads, powder coated metal and upcycled materials.

“I have an innate sense of color and am known for creating jewelry in interesting and pleasing color combinations. I am intrigued by the endless possibilities of color combinations that working with glass beads allows. Much of my time in the design process is spent choosing colors.

I combine colorful glass beads in various intricate patterns and designs to create jewelry. Much of my work uses sculptural and off-loom weaving techniques.”

After many years in the world of engineering, energy and environmental conservation, Amy left the
left-brain world to launch her own jewelry design business, and work in the sales and marketing departments at Rings and Things, a Spokane based supplier of jewelry making components.

She has served on boards of various visual arts groups in Spokane including Inland Crafts, and
Art Salvage.

For over 20 years Amy has sold her work regionally at various art shows and galleries. Through her volunteer work with Art Salvage, Amy has taught a variety of jewelry classes using upcycled materials. In 2020, her work has been included in several issues of Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine.

Originally from Great Falls, Montana, Tom Quinn grew up surrounded by art — mostly nostalgic celebrations of the Old West by the likes of Charles M. Russell and Fredrick Remington. He found there was more to art by the time he attended Gonzaga University and spent his junior year in Florence, the home of Michelangelo and Botticelli. There he became enamored of the serene beauty of Renaissance painting. After receiving a degree in art history, he went to the Art Institute of Seattle to pursue a career as an illustrator. At the time– the mid-eighties — there was a whole school of illustrators whose work was semi-primitive and had an ironic twist. The style died out by the nineties but Quinn considers it well worth reviving. Now living in Spokane, Quinn has done several murals in addition to his easel painting, his illustrated four books and several magazine articles, draws caricatures at parties and conventions, and teaches drawing and painting at the Spokane Art School, Corbin Art Center and the Institute for Extended Learning. His work has been exhibited in galleries in Spokane, Seattle, and Portland. He works mostly in acrylic and oil with hard edges, intense colors, and finicky detail. He likes to show what’s absurd but not impossible, to take the ordinary out of context, and to turn the familiar into the strange. Born in Spokane, Washington, Hannah Pomante is a printmaker who explores the various ways in which to portray the natural world around us. Hannah attended Whitworth University, earning a degree in the two-dimensional arts and minors in environmental studies and art history. Currently, she resides as the Artist-in-Residence at Spokane Art School, specializing in nature printing. She has won multiple awards, which include winning the 42 Annual Superintendent’s Art Show in Washington, as well as recently receiving a Spokane Art Grant Award. Her current grant project, created with collaborators Katie Smith and Melissa Jones, is a large-scale eco-friendly moveable bird nest. It is currently being transported throughout the area, bringing art and nature to the youth of Spokane.
